For The USA Project, I was assigned the 10 of diamonds for the animal deck.
So I work with many pieces of photo paper before completing a final artwork. These are known as preliminary sketches to painters and test strips to photographers.
The following 8 preliminary sketches are available for $25. each.
Each image is a unique print so get the one-and-only piece while you can!

Art In Hand is an arts publisher out of Davidson, NC. We strive to produce interesting, artistic, and environmentally friendly products that allow local artists to find a wider audience.
How did you begin Art in Hand?
Art In Hand was created in 2009 to bring together a local arts community and to provide artists an original way to exhibit their work and reach a wider and more varied audience.
How did you select the cities featured before going national?
I chose Charlotte because we had just moved here and I wanted to connect with the local arts community. From here, my friend offered to help me do a deck in Portland, OR where he had just moved and then I tried to do cities that were vibrant and had a larger distribution opportunity. Washington DC seemed like a good and geographically close candidate. Then we got our process nailed down and we decided to go BIG with our National deck.
What is the goal of Art in Hand?
We really just want to keep spreading local art in fun and innovative ways. If the theme decks are popular, we might continue in that vein but we also want to try genre decks as well, abstracts, folk art, who knows!??
How do you select which artists to feature?
We look for artists with consistent portfolios who have a proven track record. We try to curate decks with both traditional art as well as more modern art or unique art including a mix of genres. For the two upcoming decks, we had to focus on representational artists only but we tried to mix it up as best we can.
What feedback have you received from people about Art in Hand?
People LOVE the decks. Art lovers, game lovers, magicians?!! - We have heard that they make fantastic and reasonably priced gift items for all ages. Teachers love them too - for learning math as well as the arts. This is why we have to keep the content G-rated.
Where do you see Art in Hand in the future?
Well we already made it to the Smithsonian so that was a big goal that we met last year. Now we'd really love to get what we call a 'Big Fish!' as far as a retailer is concerned. We are heading to The Stationery Show in New York this Spring with a TON of enthusiasm and excitement. We hope to continue spreading all this fabulous art around the country. Soon after, we have plans to move into Canada and then hopefully Europe as well. Fingers crossed!
Is there anything else you would like readers to know about Art in Hand?
If you haven't seen a deck in person, find one! - Get one on-line (www.artinhandcards.com) or better yet, ask your local retailers to carry them. I am an artist myself (I did one of the jokers in the Charlotte deck) and know what a thrill it was to see my art in the gift shop at the Mint Museum store here in Charlotte.
I feel like I have created a product that if I saw it in a store, I would be SO MAD that I hadn't thought of it before and I would buy 5 decks, one for me and four to give away. This makes me happy and makes it just SO MUCH FUN to sell.
Thank you for viewing!
