I created this piece of art in 2011 for a proposal to Lane Community College in Eugene, OR for their new Health and Wellness Center. They did not purchase this piece as I hoped. Rather they chose to purchase the 2 below prints.

A portion of my research and statement about Tree of Life follows:

Throughout recorded history in cultures across the world, trees have held both a sacred and a practical relationship with medicine.
  • For centuries the only known treatment for malaria was quinine, an alkaloid found in the bark of the evergreen cinchona tree.
  • Before aspirin came in bottles, aches and pains could be cured by walking to the nearest river and finding a piece of willow bark to chew on.
  • Traditional Chinese herbal medicine has long used the leaves of the maidenhair tree, Ginkgo Biloba, to treat everything from asthma to muscle aches. These medicinal leaves have found their way into western medicine and are used to treat memory loss and coronary conditions.
  • The Cherokee Native American Tribe made a 'tea' of the leaves, which they used to wash sores and wounds.
  • In Japan, the evergreen camphor tree grows to great size. An extractive of its bark, camphor acts as a counterirritant when included in ointments for relieving muscle pain.
  • Native to Australia, the Eucalyptus is a traditional Aboriginal remedy for a variety of ailments.  Today, it is used worldwide in pills, liquids, inhalers, salves, and ointments for many common problems.

More than 2,000 different types of trees are currently used for medicinal purposes. With many unexplored areas of rain forest in the world, many new ones await discovery - or acceptance of what the indigenous populations have long known into Western Medicine.

Trees continue to be important symbols in all major cultures. The Arbor Vitae (tree of life) has long illustrated the holistic premise that all life on earth is related. It has been referenced in science, philosophy, mythology and other areas, and is also a metaphor for the livelihood of the spirit.

The tree is a powerful symbol of life and growth, and symbolizes the process of transformation.

The branches of the tree are mirrored in the human body, from blood vessels, to dendrites, to the cerebellum. Branches are nature’s preferred method of growth.

I specifically designed the branches of this piece to mirror branching within the human body.
This is best seen in the proportions as well as in the connection of the center branches.

3 years since its creation this piece has lived in many lovely places! :)

Shortly after creating this piece in 2011 a woman in Bend, OR purchased it.

Earlier this week the above 15 Artworks by Natasha Bacca were installed at Arroyo Wine Bar and Art Gallery in Telluride, CO. They will be on display throughout June with several events to coordinate with the Telluride Wine Festival. I will be there June 25th - 30th, and I would love to meet you if you are there too!

Arroyo Wine Bar and Art Gallery is located at 220 E Colorado Avenue in Telluride, CO.

It is Telluride's only hybrid fine art gallery and wine bar, featuring renowned artists from Colorado and the four corners region, and around the country.  The gallery specializes in southwest contemporary realism, in painting, photography, and mixed media on the walls as well as bronze, steel, and clay sculpture.  Arroyo hosts monthly show openings and receptions, and the gallery is open late at night year 'round for guests to enjoy both the art, and also over 100 fine wines by the glass and small plate appetizers and desserts.

Special offers on my wine series include 50% off all prints to newsletter subscribers.

Darkroom Days ~ a sneak peek at what I'm working on this quarter

6/5/2014

I release my artwork in quarterly batches, and about half way through each quarter I like to give fans a glimpse at what I'm working on.  Last quarter was dominated by my wine series, but this quarter I am back to nature with more multi-panel pieces as well as new specimens.

Multi-panel pieces:

With my artwork I illustrate the notion of exceptional nature as a mirror of exceptional human nature, using nature as a catalyst to explore concepts of life and health. I commonly use multiple-panels as views illustrating a mysterious reality alluding to the interconnectedness of all life on our planet and providing a metaphor for our common, evolutionary ancestry.
Below are some new multi-paneled pieces I've created this quarter.
Picture

New specimens:

I often deepen the illustration of exceptional nature by combining disparate elements. For example, the image below on the left illustrates a previous image in which I did so by placing carnations on aspen branches. The image below on the right is from a new set I have been working on in which I combine the petals from hydrangea flowers with aspen branches. Some pieces from this new set remind me of blossoms in spring while others remind me of snowfall in winter.
Picture
I usually use aspen trees (below right) in my artwork, but recently I've been exploring juniper trees (below left). I asked Facebook fans which tree they preferred and why, and the responses were interesting. Some people prefer one over the other based on how it looks, while others prefer one over the other based on a sound or mood. I don't have a preference for one over the other, but I use each one specifically to evoke different emotions, sensations, and ambiences. I find this happens naturally with the shape and texture of each tree, as well as through my intention with different tones, colors, and other elements.

Which do you prefer? Why?
