Inspired by Nature ~ Arches National Park

7/22/2014

It is no surprise that much of my artwork is inspired by nature. I recently took a trip which was filled with a lot of inspiring nature! One of the many places I found inspiration was in Arches National Park in Moab, Utah where I was fortunate enough to spend a couple of days with my husband. Our first evening there I was not only inspired by nature but also inspired to create a new section in my blog dedicated to nature's inspirations.

Arches National Park is located on the Colorado River north of Moab, Utah. It has over 2000 natural sandstone arches, including the world-famous Delicate Arch, in addition to hundreds of soaring pinnacles, massive fins and giant balanced rocks. The park is 76,359 acres and ranges in elevation from 4,085 feet to 5,653 feet. A landscape of "contrasting colors, landforms and textures unlike any other in the world," it was a very inspiring place!
I am sharing these photos to share what inspires me in my life. I am not sharing for the image quality. All photos were taken on my iPhone and are unedited.

Sunset hike to delicate arch:

Upon arrival in Moab my husband and I hook a hike at sunset to Delicate Arch, a 65-foot tall freestanding natural arch in Arches National Park. It is the most widely-recognized landmark in Arches National Park, depicted on Utah license plates and on a postage stamp. The Olympic torch relay for the 2002 Winter Olympics passed through the arch. The hike was approximately 3 miles round trip with an elevation gain of 480 feet, and takes about 2 to 3 hours to complete. Even at sunset it was still over 90 degrees outside!

Photos of Arches National Park:

I found this large (dead) fly on a hike and brought it home with me.
Keep an eye out for it in my upcoming artwork!

Mesa Verde National Park is a U.S. National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site in Colorado. It is the largest archaeological preserve in the United States. The park was created in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt to protect some of the best-preserved cliff dwellings in the world. It is the only cultural National Park set aside by the National Park System. It occupies 81.4 square miles near the Four Corners and features numerous ruins of homes and villages built by the Ancient Pueblo peoples. Mesa Verde is best known for cliff dwellings, which are structures built within caves and under outcroppings in cliffs. There are over 4000 archaeological sites and over 600 cliff dwellings of the Pueblo people at the site.

Mesa Verde National Park has Metate Room Restaurant on site, which serves a delicious and impressive contemporary menu inspired by regional heritage foods and flavorings. Metate Room Restaurant received a well deserved "Award of Culinary Excellence" from the American Culinary Federation. The restaurant has a bar above it which displays colorful southwestern artwork.

I spoke with the site manager in May. She was interested in my artwork for the bar and told me that the current work is all southwest design. She asked my opinion about which of my artworks might work best in the setting. I had not seen the setting and I would not usually place my artwork with southwest design, but I directed her to my wine series. From there she selected the above piece, which I was happy to see works perfectly with the southwest design!

I went to the Mesa Verde National Park in June to install the piece. See photos below.
I also enjoyed 2 nights stay at Far View Lodge with my husband. We loved hiking around and exploring the cliff dwellings in the area. It is a beautiful place!

Torchlight Inn is a bed & breakfast in Park City, Utah. Torchlight Inn combines the old world charm of a bed & breakfast with the comfort and amenities of a boutique hotel, and they are located right in the middle of the beauty that is Old Town Park City. They provide a comfortable bed, romantic fire, and beautiful views of Park City with skiing, shopping, and dinning within walking distance. The owner is also an amazing chef providing delicious breakfasts. My husband and I had the pleasure of staying here last January where we enjoyed Sundance Film Festival. Our favorite feature at Torchlight Inn was the roof top hot tub with outdoor fire place and views of town to the east with views of the night sky to the west.

Shortly after our stay, Torchlight Inn acquired the above Artwork by Natasha Bacca, Sunbeam. It greets guests as they enter the bed & breakfast.

Last month I was driving through Park City, and I stopped in to see the artwork installed. Below are installation shots I took while there.

Preliminary Sketches ~ 2nd Quarter 2014

7/3/2014

I created the above 50 artworks in the 2nd quarter of 2014,
and the following 40 preliminary sketches were used to create them.

I create my artworks in darkness on photographic paper. Once the photographic paper is exposed and processed it is complete. I cannot adjust anything afterward or go back over an area as a painter would on canvas. So I work with many pieces of photo paper before completing a final artwork. These are known as preliminary sketches or test strips.

Preliminary Sketch: A quick or less detailed painting often made as a preliminary study;
a brief general account or presentation.

I often create preliminary sketches in preparation for larger, more detailed works of art.

Test Strip: A method of calculating exposure in photographic printing. A number of exposures are given to smaller pieces of paper, over specific areas of the image to help judge the exposure in the final print.
I use test strips to calculate exposure times as well as to determine colors and color combinations.

I sell my preliminary sketches to offer my original art affordably for everyone.

I am offering the following preliminary sketches for $20, $40, and $60
+$5 shipping anywhere in the US or free pick-up locally.

This is an excellent way to collect Artwork by Natasha Bacca or get great gifts for loved ones!

Each piece is an original so get the one-and-only piece while you can!
