I love trades! I have traded my artwork for many things, including dog-sitting. Heather had been dog-sitting my dog Syan for a while when she suggested that I pay her in art rather than cash, which I too preferred. Unfortunately, Heather recently moved out of town so the trade is now complete. I AM LOOKING FOR another DOG SITTER (cash offered, but art payment preferred). For Heather's artwork she told me she likes "trees/branches/purple/rainbows." I chose branches-only initially, but I decided it looked more lively with leaves also. I made purple the dominant color (top left / center / bottom right), followed by the color Cyan (same pronunciation as my dog's name, Syan, top right / bottom left), and added some warmth (top / middle center) as if it were sunshine coming through the tree's branches to give the piece some rainbow-ness, diversity and more depth.

Multi-panel artworks have been around for thousands of years. During early Renaissance times churches and cathedrals commonly used multi-panel artworks as altarpieces. Multi-panel artworks are still popular today, and they are an interesting approach to creating art.

Two of my favorite previous artworks are multi-panel pieces, and recently I have been exploring more multi-panel artworks.  I enjoy the challenge of working with multiple pieces of paper and compositions and unifying them all into one work of art. I love the way altering the composition changes the entire piece and how viewers relate to it, and I appreciate the many ways the artwork can be displayed when illustrated in multiple panels.

I create my artworks in darkness on photographic paper. Once the photographic paper is exposed and processed it is complete. I cannot adjust anything afterward or go back over an area as a painter would on canvas. So I work with many pieces of photo paper before completing a final artwork. These are known as preliminary sketches or test strips. The above image required many preliminary sketches to complete; the errors I encounter working in darkness were multiplied by three sheets of paper and the need to have them unified to be one artwork.  

Preliminary Sketch: A quick or less detailed painting often made as a preliminary study;
a brief general account or presentation. I often create preliminary sketches in preparation for larger, more detailed works of art.

Test Strip: A method of calculating exposure in photographic printing. A number of exposures are given to smaller pieces of paper, over specific areas of the image to help judge the exposure in the final print. I use test strips to calculate exposure times as well as to determine colors and color combinations.
