Inspiration ~ Murals on Alberta Street, Portland, OR

8/20/2015

Like most artists, I find inspiration in many and varied ways. One way is by viewing the artwork of others. Another is by experiencing new things. My favorite way of experiencing new things is by traveling and living in different places. Combining all of these, I recently moved to Alberta Arts District in Portland, Oregon for a month (maybe longer). This laid back and friendly neighborhood offers a lot of art and culture, and I am fortunate to be just a few minutes walk from the heart of it all. I have been finding inspiration in all the fantastic murals that shape and color Alberta street. I have explored the street numerous times already, and every time I find a new artwork! I took an artist's date yesterday, enjoyed the warm sunshine, and photographed several of the murals along the way. I hope you find them inspiring!

Where do you find inspiration?
I would love to hear from you!

Art has a huge impact on the ambiance of a room; it can enhance a room and completely change the mood and feel of a room.

A color can brighten and cheer up a room. A subject can enliven and bring energy to a room. A style can invigorate and revitalize a room. Size can ground and establish a room.

When purchasing art, there are many factors to consider; but there is no right or wrong answer to what art will work in your space. Simply choose something you love and will enjoy living with!

Below are several examples of rooms before and after Artwork by Natasha Bacca was installed in them. Do you see the impact on the ambiance?!

Preliminary Sketches ~ 2nd Quarter 2015

7/21/2015

I created the above 30 artworks in the 2nd quarter of 2015,
and the following 20 preliminary sketches were used to create them.

See and read more about the artworks I created in the 1st quarter of 2015 here.

I create my artworks in darkness on photographic paper. Once the photographic paper is exposed and processed it is complete. I cannot adjust anything afterward or go back over an area as a painter would on canvas. So I work with many pieces of photo paper before completing a final artwork. These are known as preliminary sketches or test strips.

Preliminary Sketch: A quick or less detailed painting often made as a preliminary study;
a brief general account or presentation.

I often create preliminary sketches in preparation for larger, more detailed works of art.

Test Strip: A method of calculating exposure in photographic printing. A number of exposures are given to smaller pieces of paper, over specific areas of the image to help judge the exposure in the final print.
I use test strips to calculate exposure times as well as to determine colors and color combinations.

I sell my preliminary sketches to offer my original art affordably for everyone.

I am offering the following preliminary sketches for $20, $40, and $60
+$5 shipping anywhere in the US or free pick-up locally.

This is an excellent way to collect Artwork by Natasha Bacca or get great gifts for loved ones!

Each piece is an original so get the one-and-only piece while you can!

New Artwork by Natasha Bacca

The following 30 artworks were created in the 2nd quarter of 2015.

Abstract

Images in this series explore space. The unknown and unexplored realms of the physical world are imagined as one might experience them; an expression of ideas surrounding an appreciation of the infinite variety and vastness which surrounds us.

Trees

I use nature as a catalyst to explore concepts of life
and health. Nature exhibits a transitory beauty, an ephemeral symbol of the cycle of life that engages the Earth as a living medium, reminding viewers that life is meaningful, temporary, and sacred.

Florals

I use nature as a catalyst to explore concepts of life
and health. Nature exhibits a transitory beauty, an ephemeral symbol of the cycle of life that engages the Earth as a living medium, reminding viewers that life is meaningful, temporary, and sacred.

Butterflies

Images in this series explore concepts of change and metamorphosis. Butterflies are used as symbols of miraculous expansion and growth. Transformation is celebrated in these images.

Wine

This series is inspired by my love of wine. My family name, Bacca, means berry in Italian, and forms the root of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine.

*Wine Enthusiast Magazine has called this series "wall-worthy for any oenophile."
See the feature here.
*This series was also featured in the Italian Magazine Wine Pass. See the feature here.

Aspen Tree Symbolism

"The characteristic fluttering of aspen tree leaves is one of their most notable attributes. Aspen leaves quiver & flutter in the slightest breeze, creating their own music as they dance with the cosmic beat."

The Rocky Mountain Chalet is a boutique hotel based upon a classic European Chalet located in Winter Park, Colorado. In January 2014 they selected the 4 below prints of Artwork by Natasha Bacca when remodeling their rooms. They sent me the bedding photos below when together we decided on which images would work best. I love how they selected the artwork and new bedding at the same time!

THE STORY

Chile: A Winemaker's Paradise

Chile is a true rarity in the wine world. Unique geographic and climatic forces have allowed it to remain one of the very few grape growing regions in the world where original European rootstocks have survived, unaffected by Phylloxera – the disease that forced grape growers worldwide to graft vines onto generic rootstocks.

Crafted exclusively from grapes grown on original, ungrafted root systems and produced using sustainable methods, the intense fruit flavors and authentic varietal character of Root: 1 wines are living proof that character comes from your roots.

Root: 1 has received glowing reviews from many major publications, wine writers and enthusiasts.

I selected this bottle of wine to create a photogram of because the image is etched on the glass. This transparency allows for a sharper and more clear image than images from paper labels.

Picture

Last year the owner of Ellensburg Canyon Winery selected a giclee print of this image for his tasting room. After receiving the artwork he sent me the following message:

"Natasha-

I received my Root 1 art work today and hung it in my Tasting Room, very nice touch.

The reason I choose this piece is because I get a lot of questions about how a grape vine grows and why Washington Wines are unique in the World of Wine. A picture is worth a 1000 words and your art captures the following discussion beautifully.

The piece shows that a grape vine is a perrenial/taprooted/dicotyledonous plant, which in Washington, does not need to be grafted. This is due to our soils/climate, which do not allow for the winged form of Phyloxera to occur and therefore allows the true varietal characteristics to manifest themselves.

If you don't know the story of Phyloxera, it goes something like this: Thomas Jefferson loved wine so much that he wanted to see if American grape vines (Vitas lambrusca) when exported to France for trials there, could make a great wine in that Terroir.

With the root stock went Phyloxera (a root louse), which then infested all vineyards around the world, decimating the Wine Industry by 1865. It was not until Dr. Denson at Texas A&M University realized that the American Vitas lambrusca was resistant and by grafting Vitas vinifera onto it, saved the World's Wine Industry.

This then, makes any/all Washington Wines taste 'different' than the same variety from any other place, and in my humble opinion, taste better. This is proven by the fact that when tasted in blind competitions against the finest French Wines in Paris, the Washington Wines are chosen.

When the price point comparisons are added in, jaws drop, as we make quality wines at very affordable prices.

Cheers!"
